Meta's Emu Video and Emu Edit Unlock New Creative Possibilities Through Generative AI
Meta has announced new AI research milestones - Emu Video and Emu Edit. These leverage Emu, their foundational generative AI model for images.
Emu Video enables high-quality text-to-video generation. It uses a simplified two-step approach, first generating images from text prompts, then video from the images and text. This factorization method allows efficient training with just two diffusion models.
Emu Video produces 4-second, 512x512 videos at 16fps. In evaluations, it strongly outperformed prior methods like Make-A-Video in quality and text faithfulness. It can also animate user images based on text.
Emu Edit allows precise image editing solely through text instructions. It can perform tasks like adding/removing backgrounds, color and geometry changes, object detection and segmentation.
Current methods often over-edit images. Emu Edit focuses on precisely altering only relevant pixels per the instructions. For example, adding text to a cap leaves the cap unchanged.
The key insight is incorporating computer vision tasks as instructions enables control over image generation/editing. Emu Edit demonstrates superior performance on various tasks.
To train Emu Edit, a dataset of 10 million samples was developed - each with an input image, task instructions, and target output. It is likely the largest public dataset of its kind.
Potential use cases include creating custom animated stickers/GIFs, easily editing photos without technical skills, and enhancing Instagram posts by animating static photos.
While not replacements for professionals, Emu Video and Emu Edit could enable new forms of self-expression and creativity. From art directors conceptualizing to friends sharing unique greetings.
Meta continues to rapidly advance generative AI research. Moving from images to video generation in months. Emu Video and Edit represent new milestones toward democratizing creativity through AI.
AI Robot Chemist Creates Catalyst for Oxygen Production on Mars Using Only Local Materials
Scientists have designed a robotic "A.I. chemist" that can produce oxygen from Martian resources. The machine learned to create a catalyst using only elements found in Martian meteorites.
The catalyst allows water ice on Mars to be broken down into oxygen and hydrogen. Astronauts could use the oxygen to breathe and fuel rockets for returning to Earth.
Currently, Mars' atmosphere has barely any oxygen. But evidence shows water ice exists under the surface that could be tapped.
The robot analyzed the composition of meteorites from Mars using lasers. It identified iron, nickel, calcium, magnesium, aluminum and manganese.
From just these elements, the A.I. calculated over 3.7 million possible catalyst molecules. It would take humans thousands of years to find the best one.
Using machine learning algorithms, the robot determined the optimal catalyst formula in weeks. It produced and tested 243 of the possibilities.
The chosen catalyst can yield oxygen at around -37°C, showing the reaction could work on Mars' frigid surface.
Critically, the robot accomplished the full process of analyzing samples, identifying the best catalyst, and producing it without human input.
The system still needs to demonstrate it can operate in Mars' unique atmospheric conditions. But it shows promise for automated oxygen production from local resources.
Other methods like the MOXIE instrument on NASA's Perseverance rover can also produce small amounts of oxygen on Mars. But the A.I. approach could provide astronauts with a readily available oxygen supply using only materials available on-site.
