OpenAI Launches GPT Store for Sharing and Discovering Custom AI Assistants
OpenAI Enables Anyone to Build and Share Custom ChatGPT Assistants That Rival Expert Humans
OpenAI has launched the much-anticipated GPT Store, allowing users to discover and create customized versions of ChatGPT. The store went live this week, just two months after OpenAI first announced the ability for users to build their own ChatGPT models, called GPTs.
Over 3 million custom GPTs have already been created by users. Many builders have chosen to share their GPTs publicly for anyone to use. With the launch of the official GPT Store, these AI assistants can now be easily discovered and accessed.
The store is initially rolling out to users of ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise plans. It features popular and trending GPTs in categories like writing, research, programming, education, and lifestyle. New featured GPTs will be highlighted every week.
Some initial featured GPTs include:
- Personalized trail recommendations from AllTrails
- Search and synthesize findings from 200 million academic papers (Consensus)
- Expand coding skills with CodeAcademy’s Code Tutor
- Design presentations and social posts (Canva)
- Discover your next read (Books)
- Learn math and science with CK-12 Flexi Tutor
The store allows OpenAI to showcase the most useful and impactful GPTs built by both its partners and the wider community. Users can browse GPTs, view descriptions, examples, and reviews before deciding which to install and use.
Sharing Your Own GPTs
The GPT Builder makes it simple for anyone to build AI assistants without needing coding skills. To share a creation in the store, builders have to set their GPT’s sharing settings to “public” and ensure they comply with OpenAI’s content policies and brand guidelines.
There is also a new GPT Builder Revenue program launching in 2024 that will pay builders based on usage and engagement with their public GPTs. The exact payment details and criteria are still to be confirmed.
New Team Plan for Businesses
Alongside the store, OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Team - a new collaborative workspace plan tailored for business teams to get the most value from ChatGPT at work.
ChatGPT Team provides access to advanced AI models like GPT-4 and Codex 2, data analysis tools, a shared team workspace, and centralized administrative controls for managing users and data.
As with ChatGPT Enterprise plans, businesses own and control their proprietary data through Team plans. Companies can also choose to list internal-use only GPT models in a private store accessible by employees.
The Future of the GPT Store
In the original announcement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared his vision for the limitless possibilities of custom GPTs:
"In addition to these examples, there are many more kinds of GPTs people are creating and many more that will be created soon. We know many people who want to build GPTs don't know how to code. We've made it so you can program a GPT just by having a conversation. We believe natural language will be a big part of how people use computers in the future and we think this is an early glimpse."
With customized AI assistants for nearly every niche and profession, the GPT Store represents the next evolution of making AI accessible, helpful, and collaborative for all. It also opens up new opportunities for entrepreneurs to build business ideas around their GPT creations.
The number of public GPTs will likely explode over the next months as more ChatGPT plans gain access to the store and builder features. We can expect continual enhancements to how custom AI tools are shown, shared and monetized through the platform as well.
By nurturing a third-party ecosystem of custom GPTs, OpenAI is aiming to cement ChatGPT’s position as the go-to destination for AI-powered productivity, education, creativity and more for both individuals and teams. Rather than keeping advanced generative abilities locked up in private research labs, the company wants to empower ordinary people to shape the AI future they envision.
